A flute without holes that cannot produce a sound. Figuratively, it signifies an exceptional teaching beyond words, free from attachment even to doctrines of impermanence. When a flute without holes, which cannot be sounded through reason or thought, produces a wondrous sound through the workings of truth, it becomes a Zen expression for truth beyond human knowledge and language, and the wondrous workings of Buddhist awakening.
